It can exercise a supported host electrical port and lane configuration according to the loopback design and host procedure. Should a connector be cleaned before it is inspected?

Can an optical attenuator be selected by dB value alone?

Calculate the expected receive power and keep the receiver limits in view. An attenuator should be part of a defined optical setup, not an improvised response to an unexplained link alarm.
Does a transceiver checker replace testing in the target switch?
Not unless its documented scope exactly reproduces the required host behavior, which should not be assumed. A checker can support specified identification or diagnostic tasks, while the target switch still controls platform recognition, firmware policy, port configuration, FEC and live-link operation. Final compatibility approval should use the intended host and peer topology.
